D & S #1201 will soon arrive in Durango
Author: PlyWoody

D&S new #1201 is moving west in New Mexico so will soon be arriving in Durango.  If it's trucks have not arrived from SA, I hope if they have to unload it on a crib of ties, that they do so exactly centered over an existing spur of track. That way just using the shop engine jacks, it could be set down on the new wheels when they arrive.  Save the cost of second crane visit to put things together.

I'll ride twice to make up for your absence. Diesel aside, a new 3 foot diesel in the US in 2020 is worth
a visit.

What is the motive power end goal?  What percentage of excursions will be diesel as opposed to steam? Will the coal powered steamers only run when fire danger is low or will they all eventually be converted to oil?

It has been stated by D&S a mixture of  engines to be coal and oil.

Depends on the future of the King Mine at Herperus. It closes and you'll see a rapid conversion to oil and
in the interim more use of the diesels.

The Milwaukee Road credited something else to the US prevailing in World War II:

I love the sight and smell of both diesels. Most passengers don't really care.

I'm a millennial...
I'm definitely more of a diesel fan...
I don't know why but I've seen active steam; it doesn't really excite me...
I'm also slightly cynical...
I'm smiling on the inside...

Have a nice day...

You need to ride a train to Bald Knob on Cass Scenic RR.
You need to ride a C&TS train from Chama to Osier.
You need to ride some main line steam train climbing Horseshoe Curve.
You need to experience steam to discover why it grabbed so many young and old. I guess you can't be impressed with the men in the cab of the Big Boy or other engines. Maybe your dream is being in a rocket to the Moon.
Yes, times change thing.

The D&S has done studies on passengers who ride and a lot don’t like the cinders flying around. That and the issues with the dry forests is pushing them to oil. And, hopefully, minimal use of the diesels in passenger service. But I would rather see a diesel running than have the railroad shutdown due to fire hazards. Plywoody is right though, Cass and the Cumbres and Toltec can do wonders for your soul, if you like steam. But I respect those who don’t care for it. At least you like trains!

I like the covered open gons on the D&S, nice seating and a welcome addition when the thunderstorm hits.
C&TS on the other hand is great for a tan!
