Not Many People Got Photos Of This Operation Near The Capital!
Author: LoggerHogger

Considering that the Mud Bay Logging Company railroad had it's log dump less than 30 miles from the Washington State Capital in Olympia, very few railfans got in there to see it in action.  Fortunately, for us, Doug Richter was able to catch it before it ceased running in the late 1930's.

In May, 1936 Doug was at the log dump and engine servicing facility at Mud Bay in time to see 2-8-2 #4 come in and drop its logs into the bay and then head over to the oil tanks for fuel for the next day's run to the woods.  This trim 70-ton 2-8-2 was built by Baldwin in 1912 for the Thurston County Railroad.  She was then sold to Mud Bay.  After MBL shut down she was re-sold to Guy F. Atkinson as their #2804 for work in California.

I like both the color and B&W versions.  I am impressed to see how clean the locomotive is!!

Ron,

Mud Bay took good care of their motive power.  Not all logging companies let the appearance of their steam power get away from them.
