Not All Steam Locomotives Were Easy Manage To Get A Photo Of!
Author: LoggerHogger

Back in the 1930's when the railfan hobby was in it's early years, the goal for most of these camera-toting young men was to capture a good "roster shot" of as many steam locomotives as they could.  Some railfans sought out the more obscure and smaller railroads like logging lines and shortlines as their target.

In 1937, one enterprising railfan head there was a 3-truck Climax parked near Concrete Washington that had not been captured on film by anyone before.  Since this Climax was retired and may not be around much linger, he set out to get her on film for his collection.  When he arrived and found her, she was not in a spot easy to photograph.  That did not deter him and he climbed through the bushes and onto the wooden car parked next to her to get as good a shot as he could.

The result we see here may be the only photo ever taken of Puget Sound Saw Mills & Shingle 3-truck 90-ton Climax #290.  She was built in 1916 for PSSM&SC and would be gone to scrap later in 1937 after this photo was taken.

If it were not for railfans like this one, there would be so many steam locomotives that would never have been captured on film even once.  We owe them a debt of gratitude for their work.

Yet another GREAT picture Martin.....this is another that needs to be in a Trainmaster, ok?   Your postings are one of the multiple things that I am thankful for this Thanksgiving....yes, this is not a normal Thanksgiving and I GREATLY miss the opportunity to hug my extended families but there are still things to appreciate this 2020 Thanksgiving.    Arlen

The Great Depression caused a lot of engines to meet their maker in the scrap yard long before they should have.
