This id the AFT running in reverse to Santa Barbara. Good friend and SP Engineer Russell Bates (RIP) was in the cab as Pilot engineer. He had fired and run cab forwards for years. He showed the fireman how to set the firebox for high speed reverse running/

After more than 40 years of firing 4449, I'd sure be interested in learning how firing during "high speed reverse running" is different.

All I know is what Russell told me. He said it had more to do with how the dampers were set than anything else.

Yup, about the exit car. The caravan was 3 wide at some points, southbouund traffic along the Rincon was screwed.
