Niles Canyon Railway, Summer 2005, WP 918, QRR #2
Author: FiveChime

A special event day on the Niles Canyon Railway back in the Summer of 2005 with restored WP F7 918 and Quincy Railroad 2-6-2 #2.
NCRy is not running now but plans are being developed to begin operations again as soon as Alameda County comes into a pandemic
status that allows limited outside gatherings.

I remember when the two WP F's were sent to North Platte for repainting and overhaul work.
I have some photos somewhere in my collection of them sitting in the shop after their paint job.
They arrived in WP freight green colors and left in the passenger scheme.

Silver and orange was the "freight" scheme too. The green arrived in 1970.

918 was not one of those that went to North Platte.  It was a parts queen in Stockton (after it caught on fire coming over Altamont Pass in 1981) and scheduled to be scrapped until Jim Evans talked the WP into donating it to the PLA on 12/1/1981.  We completely rewired it and replaced all of the missing components including brake gear and traction motors.  It was re-sided and repainted in 2004 prior to coming to Niles Canyon.

What model horn does the WP 918 have on it. That's a mellow sound .  Thanks for sharing this fine video.

It's a Leslie-tyfon A-200. Not sure of the exact version, but it's a bronze casting (rather than aluminum). The tag is missing from the diaphragm cover.

The rear facing horn in this photo is now the forward facing horn. The original forward facing horn was stolen in 2002 (would still love to find it). Jim (Same Jim that posted the video) found us another A-200 that came from an SP f-unit to fill the void.

Quick point about the paint sceme that is still on 917 and 921 in Portola. They are wearing a near copy of what made 913 famous in the late '70s. It's sort of a mix netween the freight and passenger sceme.

1) Roof photo from 2003 at the beginning of the cosmetic restoration phase for 918.

2) This was the horn that 918 wore for a few years. This was from one of the Cal Zephyr engines and is said to be extremely rare. Jim can add to this if he wishes...
