A Heisler With a Bumper Winch
Author: MacBeau

Russel Lee was not specific about what lumber company in Baker County, Oregon he was photographing back in May 1941, but that aftermarket accessory out front suggests it is Stoddard Lumber Company Number 4, a 50 ton, 36" gauge built in 1922. Stoddard Number 5, a 36 ton version built in 1917 also had this same feature, so it will fall to Martin or one of the truly knowledgeable to confirm which it might be. Stoddard is reported to have had 60 miles of railroad between 1914 and 1943 when operations ended.

Be of good cheer,

This is Stoddard Lumber Heisler #4 with a steam winch on her pilot for loading her own log cars.  Al Farrow took the photo in 1941.

Russell was good enough to show us this one at work too. Thanks as always Martin for the clarification, much appreciated.

Were those slots in the pilot to adjust the coupler height, link and pin, or both?

Yes, and that was pretty common on logging locomotives.

Those are two excellent photos by Russell Lee.  I looked him up and discovered he was an FSA photogrpher.

And one of two in the room the day Walker Evans was fired! The other was Ben Shahn.
