Steam & Excursion > The Paperwork Can Pinpoint When A Locomotive Was Sold!

Coming across the shipping paperwork for a steam locomotive can sometimes be the best way to determine exactly when a certain locomotive changed owners.  This is the case with the sale of Consolidated Timber Co. ALCO 2-8-2T to the Medford Corporation in 1946.

The first photo shows CTC #2 out of service and stored at the lumber company shops at Glenwood, Oregon in October, 1945.  She has finished logging the Tillamook Burn which was the reason that Consolidated Timber C. was formed in the first place.  She was for sale at the time of this photo.

Next we see the SP&S telegram that shows that #2 has been sold to the Medford Corporation (MEDCO) and that lumber company has sent a messenger to accompany her first on the SP&S from Glenwood and then on to the Southern Pacific who will take her the rest of the way to her new home in Medford, Oregon.

As we see in the last photo, #2 became the #6 at MEDCO and she lost her saddle tanks in favor of the tender we see here.

Nothing beats original source documents in historical research. Probably not socially acceptable to state this but that locomotive is far more aesthetically pleasing as a tank engine. Thanks for the look and the history lesson.
