Even Among The Clutter Of This Facility, She's Still Impressive!
Author: LoggerHogger

The shops at Missoula, Montana in July, 1957 were not exactly the tidiest place on the Northern Pacific's Railroad system.  Out behind the shops was more that the usual clutter.  Still, sitting prominently there we find one of NP's impressive 2-8-8-2's, #4025.

She does not have many days in service left as the will soon be stricken from the roster in favor of the new diesels that are arriving almost daily by this late date.  For now, though, she still is impressive.

Northern Pacific Z-3 2-8-8-2 #4025 was frequently used on the Lookout Pass line to Wallace, Idaho.  One of her last trips took her to Arlee, MT on January 9, 1958.

#4025 was a 1920 Alco product and was scrapped at South Tacoma on March 4, 1958.

Note that there is no means to deliver sand to the drivers of the low pressure engine.  It must have been pretty anemic compared to the high pressure engine.

Aren't there two square boxes for sand on the deck of the front engine?

Of course -- I didn't think of that!  Sand pipes from the top of the boiler wouldn't be practical because of the lateral motion.
Edit:  They deliver sand to the front engine from the top of the boiler on some articulateds, so they must use flex lines or flex joints.

That is one small tender for such a large machine.

That may have been necessary to help her fit on the existing turntables in the region she was assigned to.
