Steam & Excursion > One Suspects, This Is Not How This Locomotive Left The Factory!Date: 06/18/21 03:27 One Suspects, This Is Not How This Locomotive Left The Factory! Author: LoggerHogger The steam locomotive was an amazing piece of machinery given that extent that it could be adapted to fit the needs of it's various owners over the years. Here is a prime example of that.
Originally built by Porter for the Washington Wood Preserving Company out of Hillyard, Washington this 0-4-0T was destined to spend her life shuttling cars about tie plants. She remained at Hillyard even after her original owner sold to National Pole & Treating Co. After a corporate merger, she became Minnesota & Ontario #1 as we see her here in July, 1949 in Spokane, Washington. She later would be saved for preservation by Charles Morrow as part of his small collection of steam locomotives. We see a number of additions and modifications to #1 that have been made over the years of her service. One of the most obvious changes is the large replacement sand "dome". Clearly, the need for traction in getting the strings of creosote tie cars moving was at a premium. While there is no shine left on her, she has the look of pure utility. Martin Edited 6 time(s). It's a lot easier to weld up a square box then it is to make a dome. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/19/21 10:43 by PHall. Date: 06/18/21 17:34 Re: One Suspects, This Is Not How This Locomotive Left The Factor Author: lynnpowell < < < saved for preservation by Charles Morrow > > >
