Steam & Excursion > Who Among Us, Would Not Want To Jump Aboard This Train?!Date: 06/23/21 03:05 Who Among Us, Would Not Want To Jump Aboard This Train?! Author: LoggerHogger The Northwestern Pacific Railroad operated through some of the most beautiful parts of Northern California. Much of it's route traversed what we now know as the "Wine Country" north of the Bay Area and then continued on through the impressive Redwood Forests before terminating a Eureka, California.
In this undated photo, likely taken in the early-1930's, we see one of the NWP's earlier 4-4-0's and her 2-car passenger train waiting at the line's station in Santa Rosa ready to depart on her southbound run back to Sausalito. The clouds have just cleared after a brief rain shower and NWP #9 and her crew are getting ready to resume their run. Wouldn't it be great to hop aboard just to see where it is headed next? I don't know where the Petaluma & Santa Rosa overhead was by the station in the 30s but in the 60s/70s there engine was kept about where the poll is with the freight station behind. Below is a section of the 1954 Santa Rosa quadrangle (aerial survey 1952) showing the Petaluma and Santa Rosa line from Sebastopol entering at lower left. At least some of the stub tracks opposite the station are P&SR, explaining the overhead wires in the background of the photo. The predominately north-south line through town is NWP. My heart is warm with the friends I make, And better friends I'll not be knowing; Yet there isn't a train I wouldn't take, No matter where it's going. -Edna St. Vincent Millay |
