Hey!!

They never shut down the roundhouses,--- in Portland, back-in-the-day!!

Its good weather to find who the 'useful' volunteers are... to blow the flues & tubes
on '49 & the 700...   Those that complete the job are 'keepers'...

Roll the engines outside, connect up a supply line to the 'blower' pipe at the smoke box,
and cram a couple of volunteers into the firebox with an air-lance,....
... ( don't forget the 'confined space' rules...)

That's how we found Doyle, Jerry Jacobson & a few more...back in '68...
They got that job done and then said ( smiling): what ya' got, next?

Put them to work in the miserable weather...to find the best workers...

I'm just sayin'

Great weather for a steam trip.  With a lot of slow running and sitting.  Been through plenty of those.

Portland 113 F in the open air.  Rail temperatures way over that.  Welded rail need to be set 20 degrees higher for norm as a pull apart on signaled track is safer than sun kinks that don't effect a track circuit.  Better to stretch rail than to compress it to extreme.  How long will it be before they spray white paint all main line rail to help prevent sun kinks?

It has everything to do with ORHC, it's an impassioned plea to paint the turntable white so that
it fits into the pit!

Realistically, the length of the ORHF turntable does not compare to
sun kinks that occur involving linear miles of steel tracks...

Keep the white paint in the bucket.

What "pit"?  The turntable "pit" hasn't been constructed yet.

This may be the nuttiest thread ever on TO.
We started with a report that would be useful to anyone contemplating visiting the ORHC and seemed like common sense to protect both visitors and volunteers.
Thank you for that information.
