Classic UP steam in full flower
Author: Copy19

I had such a good response to my painting of of the narrow gauge Carson & Colorado No. 8 I can't resist showing one I did of big UP steam crossing the Green River at Castle Rock.   The painting is in possession of my longtime friend TO'er GMUP so I asked him to send me a picture of the painting so I could post it on Trainorders.  He quickly obliged.

I was always fascinated by the 9000s although I never saw one "in the flesh" so it's the star. I regret I never heard one with its unique three cylinder exhaust.  I have to laugh at my fondness for the beasts as I recall a conversation with a retired UP shop worker several years ago who told me he transferred from Cheyenne to Denver to get away from the 9000s since they were such PETA to work on.

I added a second train for dramatic flare and of course a couple of employees to give it a roll-bye.  Highball!

Beautiful smoke plume on the presumed passenger train speeding past.  I'm reminded of my childhood, when we often spotted trains by the plume in the distance which sometimes would prompt a chase to find/see it.

Great painting John.
The one you gave me still hangs prominently in my living room.
I'll take a photo of it and post it for you.

I have one too.  I wonder how many of us here have a Bromley painting?

We comissioned him to do one of the 4449 passing the Coyote depot with a prune orchard in bloom---- my husband leased the land  across from it to farm row crops. ( the orchard had been removed) Since my downsizing my railfan son has the painting in his man cave.

Howard Fogg's audio recording of a UP 9000 is excellent, it can be found on Don Strack's Utah Rails site.

Thanks Bob.  The picture hung in my office in the old headquarters building until we moved across the street to cubical land.

And add me as well. Lots of liking here from up north in Michigan. Particularly since I've been to that very spot following the Big Boy to Ogden for the Golden Spike 150th observance. The four of us traveling and chasing the 4014 together talked about what UP steam must have been like making the S-curve out of the yard at Green River, and crossing the river, then assaulting the hill up to Peru. We concluded it must have been quite the show. And your painting confirms our thoughts.

Thanks much, John.
