Steam & Excursion > Illinois Central 2604 On The C&CDate: 05/01/22 17:54 Illinois Central 2604 On The C&C Author: MaryMcPherson Railroaders called the Centralia to Carbondale local turn "The C&C." This turn, along with the Carbondale to Cairo local turn, were among the last holdouts for steam assignments on the mainline of the Illinois Central as a flood of GP9s arrived from EMD.
On January 24, 1959, Jim Adams was trackside with his tape recorder. Homebuilt 4-8-2 #2604 was leading the northbound C&C. The train had stopped to do some switching at Ashley, Illinois, as he waited at Richview. The recording begins as #2604 can be heard pulling away from Ashley, the sound carrying very well on that cold evening. Jim Adams also took the photo of #2604 on another day, working northbound near DuQuoin on the C&C. Mary McPherson Dongola, IL Diverging Clear Productions Edited 1 time(s). Nothing to hear now but 70 series EMDs and GE designs.

I'm working them over for the digital age. There is a lot of stuff I did NOT know about, in addition to the recordings I first heard in the late nineties.
