Frisco 1522 on a runby
Author: gcm

June 90
I was a passenger and didn't get many pictures but what a trip between St.Louis-Newberg and back on the Frisco during the 1990 NRHS convention.
Steep grades and fast running on this trip as 1522 returned to home rails for the first time in 35-40 years ?
The crew of the 1522 did a fantastic job.
Special thanks to TO's Frisco1522 who (I believe) ran the engine for most of the trip on the same route his father had run steam so many times in the past.

The first shot was a runby (don't remember where) and the last one I think was at the end of the day in the St.Louis area by a carnival.

Well done - Your carnival photo really is special. I wonder how many looked up to see a real attraction go by the fantasy world often associated with a carnival.

I'll never forget 1522 as she was coaxed up Newberg (wrong) Rolla Hill with never a slip and at a constant speed. We must have had 18 coaches on that trip and that engine handled them without a sweat. That sweet exhaust bark was never better! I hope we see it again sometime.

First photo was taken at a place called Rook, which on the RR is just a passing track.  Good spot for runbys.
My favorite place as engineer was going up Rolla Hill.  My Dad's old division.  He was standing in back of me, spiritually, ready to slap the back of my head if I screwed up.
Good days.
Worth the tinnitus.

The stack talk that day from SLSF 1522 was unforgetable ! What a ride . 1522 was the loudest steam locomotive at track speed I ever rode behind and one of the best looking , too.
Thanks for sharing your slides from the trip , Gary.

Brutally hot.  A/C on some of the coaches were laboring and failing.  The UP cars were all cold as ice.  Newburg was horrible and I don't think they let too many people off there because of the heat.  Had to be close to 100.  Running east out of Newburg and up Rolla HIll was my first time as engineer on the mainline.  To say I was nervous would have been an understatement.  Jim Boyd was up on Rolla Hill feeding the chiggers and made the remark that "1522 was loud enough to wake the cremated".  I loved it.  Frisco engines were shotguns.
Weather was cooler on the last day and 1522 doubleheaded with 844 w/b and we cut off at the Museum of Transportation and the 844 continued to Kansas City.  I told Steve Lee that poor 844 had labored in obscurity until we doubleheaded with her.  We did a couple of runbys in Webster Groves that eveyone loved.
I can't believed that was almost 32 years ago.

We were there and here is a preview to the video we made of the event.  Newburg trip was good, as was the doubleheader at the end.  What a way to end the video!

It was a good time by all during that convention. We ran an excursion over to Findlay Junction with 844. And we loaned Don and the guys our passenger equipment for their run which was a great success. Then as a grand finale we double headed with the 1522 out to Barratts to the musueum where the 1522 cut off and backed in there.
Thanks for the great mempories Don and it was a pleasure to have some of your fine crew fire for me on various trips.

Awesome set of pics, love the 1ST one, but it sucks that's one steam locomotive I'll never see in person!
