N&W 611 Crossing The Tye River

N&W 611 is crossing the Tye River in Lynchburg, Virginia on September 6, 1982.

That's a great picture at a great location.  Thank you.  The location is Tye River, north of Lynchburg.  The former Southern crosses the James River at Lynchburg.

The remnants of hurricane Camille destroyed the prior double track bridge in 1969 (there were many deaths here in Nelson county) and Southern quickly rebuilt the bridge as single track using existing short trestle supports that they had on hand, thus the unusual bridge piers.

IIRC, this was the cover pic of Southern's "TIES" company magazine.

I take it it only took a matter of weeks for Southern to get the bridge rebuilt, nice shot of the 611 over the bridge too!

If I remember correctly a passenger train, perhaps the Peach Queen, was held or there would have been a train in the drink.
