UP 2-10-2 5511 and 6936, and Western Maryland at Cheyenne today
Author: highgreengraphics

Today, 2-10-2 Santa Fe type UP 5511, a 1923 Baldwin, rested next to UP Centennial DDA40X 6936 in the afternoon sun at the Cheyenne, WY Steam Shop, here with other vestiges of classic Union Pacific visible in the background. Both are going with 4-6-6-4 Challenger 3985 to the RHMA Museum in Silvis, IL soon. This photo does not hold a candle to the great views of 4 steam locomotives side by side at the same place taken yesterday that are on UP's steam website, but have not shown up here on TO. Meanwhile, at the Cheyenne depot, CSX's Western Maryland - commemorative unit passed as a second unit on an eastbound manifest. === === = === JLH

Thanks, Jim, for a picture of a CSXT "heritage on the cheap" unit that I've never seen.  Gerry

It's on Facebook - search Union Pacific Steam and you should find a couple groups (private and public) that have photos of the four.

Gotta admit, if they get 5511 running it would be close to the last thing I'd ever thought would happen. You
know wheels too small, too slow for excursion work, this is bad, that's broken, etc.

Out

That long smokebox on the 5511 looks like it is almost even with the pilot.

3985 has so called claims too, and I bet all that's needed is the front truck work and she'll be running like the way Alco intended!

Personally, as nice as the steam engines are, I would like to see the Centennial out running again.  That would be really cool too.

Here, Here ! ..as the Brits would say.
I heard the problem with the E units was the need to replace the 36" wheels .

well there is certain number of people here that bash Ed, and I didn't want this to be attributed to him, Steve Sandberg knows this, and stated they will rebuild it.

According to the current manager, EVERYTHING  from the previous crew is "worn out"! Why the 3 E units and DDA40X need to be "rebuilt" is simply fake news ($6936 has barely 150,000 miles on her).
