It's an ad from Alco, so likely in a trade magazine.

Not so sure. I seem to remember advertisements for locomotive builders in popular magazines in the late forties (that was before I was born but not by much, so I am talking about looking through old magazines).

But then again, I might be having false memories.

Those kinds of ads were even in National Geographics many years ago.  I know because I read them.

Could be from Life, Look, Time, Newsweek… Late 30’s/Pre War is my guess.

YesYesYes,Those were the media Everyone LOOked at back then, including Nat Geo!
During the 2000s I collected Nat Geo mags from 1930s 40s and 50s at thrift stores. specifically for the RR ads, and LIFE/LOOK mags too from the 60s and 70s specifically for the car ads.

Some of The best RR ads in Nat Geo magazines were between late 1940s to early 1960s then television ads took over.

I do recall seeing locomotive manufacturer ads in Nat Geo, oh I'd say roughly 1930s to 1940s, then after the war the RR ads went to mostly promoting passenger service.
Heck I threw a lot away, but I still have some ad pages stored away somewhere?
