Southern 4501 along a levee near New Orleans
Author: gcm

Nov 85
4501 (along with a couple of FP7 units) heads north on the Southern along Lake Ponchatrain on an excursion to Hattiesburgh.
A few years before, Southern was letting the engine pull 15 cars over this route with no diesels.

I remember seeing a Southern steam engine in the Smithsonian in D.C. back the late 60's.  What number was that one?  4501 sounds familiar.

The one in the museum in Washington D.C. is a PS4 Pacific, #1401. The 2-8-2 pictured above is #4501, which was used in Southern Rwy.excursion service, and is still operational on the Tennessee Valley RR, out of Chattanooga, TN.

Okay.  Thanks.  At least I got the "01" part right.  I was in the army back there at the time and had other things on my mind.
