The RSD5 would fit right in at D-L, too.

I’m sorry, this is heart breaking. Doyle worked so hard to finish this.

The expensive, complex part is the complete electrical wiring
that is missing.

It needs complete high voltage traction motor wiring, from generator
to control contactors and down to the traction motors, complete low-voltage
(75 volts) control and MU wiring.  And don't forget the wiring for the dynamic brakes...
ALL of the above is missing.  Copper is getting EXPENSIVE!

It's hard to install all that wiring with all the components: engine, generator, etc,
in-place.  In the factory, all the eiectrcal wiring harnesses, etc, went-in first.

It can be done, but it requires complete electrical planning: from
complete electrical drawings , wiring lists, point-to-point instructions:
up to receptacles, fixtures, control stand, etc.

Plus, in today's world, you'll need to include PTC, radios, cameras. etc.
Doyle gave me a complete tour of 190 several years ago..

Probably ought to have a 'power-car'  ( 3-phase, 480v HEP) for today's
passenger cars and the travelling public's expectations.

Yes, the engine runs, and that's good; but, the expensive part ---
both in labor and parts, lies ahead.

W.

( All of its original wiring was stripped out, all bare, down in Mexico).

In reading the article it sounds like this has been discussed for quite some time. Mr. McCormack will have some access to the 190 if he'd like, and it couldn't go to a much better home it seems. A difficult decision no doubt, but a responsible decision. I think it's a brilliant way to handle this part of his legacy and yes Mr. McCormack, like it or not you do have quite a legacy.

Cheers, Dave

Why is this "heart breaking"?  Doyle is about to turn 80, and finally wants to relax a bit. Plus, the people there in Pennsylvania have wanted the 190 for quite some years, and will quickly "finish" her return to operation.

I'd call it more bittersweet. I was rooting for him to finish his passion project in-house. But, he's old and probably doesn't have unlimited resources for it to be done in time to enjoy it. And, even if it was finished at ORHF, I'd guess options for operating it would be on the Oregon Pacific and not much else. It's a bummer someone else gets to run the ball over the goal line after all his time, effort and expense. But if he still gets access to it, he gets to make some of his investment back AND play with it on someone else's dime. I'd call that a win-win.

Are there any plans to repaint it as D&H No. 18? Sounds like they made him a offer he couldn't refuse based on the further work and $$$ the loco needed, plus Doyle's age and work at the ORHC closer to home.

Okay, bittersweet is probably the better word. I just would have loved to seen him achieve running status for it himself.
Old is a bitch, and it’s catching up with all us old AFTers…. sigh.

There's no doubt in my mind that Doyle could have had the loco operational, but it must have been money and time working against him.

We just had Doyle as our speaker at the NKPHTS convention last year, and he hadn't mentioned selling, so I was a bit surprised. However, as said above, this is probably the best-case scenario for the 190 at this point in time. I just hope there is a NO PAINT clause in the deal, for at least 5 years. Already, people are lining up to give their precious opinion on whose scheme it should get, as if that's a given. All I can say is BACK OFF!  : )

Thats what my thoughts were, I wasn't sure how old he was exactly but I figured 80. In this small world, my uncle in Oregon City is his CPA of all things. What a journey though. Were it not for Doyle...

Doyle is a great guy. I met him in person once, though he didn't know me from Adam, he was very friendly and answered my questions.

Re: NKP #190 PA sold

Many years ago, June, 1968 at Conneaut, Ohio, Roos Rowland
had arranged to lease tte empty NKP roundhose.

When 759 arrived in mid-June, two Conneaut residents presented themselves,
( along with several others) and inquired about being on the team that was
going to restore Steamtown's exNKP, 2-8-4, 759.  Another young volunteer was
on 759 was Jerry Joe Jacobsen, along with many others.

Joe Karal, a retired NKP boilermaker, and his friend, a young Doyle McCormack.
What fantastic luck, probably Devinely inspired.

Joe had been the boilermaker that had last worked on 759 in the summer of 1958.
They had just completed the  1472-day boiler overhaul and inspection.
The railroad parked the 759, but never put it 'in service' --- it remained a Zero Mileage engine.
Joe, and all the backshop workers got laid-off, permanently.

Since they joined our team, the steam loco world has never been tte same.
Doyle was an avid worker, and Joe was a consummate teacher --for our whole team.
from the volunteers, up to leader, Ross.

Its been my distinct pleasure to have known, worked with and learned from Doyle
and Joe. They assisted me in so many ways, on other locos and similar projects.

Thank you, Doyle for undertaking the leadership role in getting the 4449 ready for
the AFT, starting in'74.  It was Joe and Doyle that brought certainty and
professionalism to the Portland Project. Thank you, Doyle, for all you have done.
The 190 will be in good hands... I'll keep an eye on it, when it comes back East.

Thank you also, for saving the Turntable.... I'm planning a trip & visit when it goes into
service.  See you then!

Wes Camp

Just look at how fantastic that PA looks, typical of the care Doyle takes with his projects.

I'm glad that before shot got posted, people need to appreciate how far that locomotive has come. As to Doyle finishing the
wiring, it's easy to consider a job that size, that complex and that back breaking to someone else. I don't blame him in the least
bit and it's going to the most Alco-savvy group in the country. And one last thing to consider, if he had finished it, where was it
going to run?

Congratulations to Doyle on this GREAT success....he has been hoping that his loco would find a good home and it did.   I applaud Justin for another great article.   While I join those that are sorry to see it leave Portland, it will receive more appreiation in its new home.  Arlen
