A Wee Bit Of Nevada Northern....
Author: Earlk

Sunday afternoon, May 14, was cold and windy with threatening skies as 2-8-0 #81 charged up the hill out of Ely.
1. Crossing Lackawanna Rd.
2. Emerging from Tunnel 1 entering Robinson Canyon.
3. Robinson Canyon is pockmarked to hundreds of "glory holes" left by prospectors looking for riches.  Two a visible above the train.

The cut, as well as the rock dump behind #81 are the remains of the original Tunnel #2 - not to be confused with the modern "Tunnel 2" which is man made affair where US 50 crosses over the track just up grade from Tunnel 1.  This tunnel was constant problem. It was cut through the only section of non-solid rock in the canyon. It was daylighted in the 1940's.  Notice the pole line still follows the original topography over the hill.

1-2. #81 barks to the gray Nevada skies climbing 2+% grade.
