WMSR Gets Grant for Track Work
Author: pt199

The State of Maryland has given the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad a $200,000 grant for track maintenance.
The work will involve tie replacement and ballast tamping on a segment of the railroad near Frostburg, Maryland.

The state also might designate $1.5 million in 2024 capital funding for work on the WMSR’s bridge between Ridgeley, West Virginia, and Cumberland, Maryland. That will require approval of the Maryland state legislature.

That sounds good to me as they need quality tracks to operate steam locomotives, otherwise, disaster for the locomotives.  They truly need to get the 1309 back in operation ASAP since it is a tourist attraction, not only for the steam enthusiasts but for so many who have never seen a large steam engine plodding the rails.

It would be great if they can fix what they need to in order to use the TT in Frostburg.

They don't turn the 1309 at Frostburg because they can not reach the wye at Ridgeley yard without rebuilding over a mile of decaded track with their money. But that dangerous track is in WV and the grant money is MD.

Yeah, but they have money for new diesels & some new to them pass car they bought not long ago.  I just SMH that one of their given reasons for the 1309 was, as they stated, it was supposed to haul a whole train up there, even a longer train, by itself & reduce operating & crew costs.  But duh, they can't even get the thing there to turn it around.  It'd have been cheaper & quicker to rebuild that slap worn out 734 since they're basically doing the same thing they've been doing for years, but now with a bigger engine.... ....that also does not work now.

" SMH" = keyboard shorthand for "shaking my head"....

W.

( I had to look it up ... pretty soon there'll be whole sentences with nothing
but capitalized groups of slang, initials only --- as AI comes into this place.)

I'm happy you learned something today.  I used ONE acronym in my post & you felt it necessary to mention it.
How about the other things I commented on regarding that operation?

There's a video out on YouTube which mentions both the curve radius and 2% grade abrupty starting at
the edge of the table and mentions a long realignment to correct the issues. In the long run it would seem
cheaper to do that rather than attaching a diesel for the return move.
