One hundred fifty-five engines of this type were built, with 15 surviving in preservation. 80078 entered service from Brighton Works on 2nd February 1954 and was allocated to Plaistow shed for the London, Tilbury and Southend Line, working commuter services out of London until that route was electrified in 1962. After being transferred to Wrexham in Wales, the loco was withdrawn in 1965.
