PA Trolley Museum Marking 70th Anniversary
Author: pt199

This year will mark the 70th anniversary of the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum.
The museum, which is located south of Pittsburgh in Washington, is planning a series of major events throughout the year, including the biennial Penn Trolley Meet, which will run June 7-8, concurrent with the NATHS Hoosier Traction Meet June 7-9 and the museum’s annual Anything on Wheels Weekend, June 8-9.

The museum launched on Feb. 7, 1954, with three vintage streetcars. The collection has since grown to 52 cars that once ran on traction systems and city railways in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.
Also part of the collection are New Orleans’ streetcar named Desire; the Terrible Trolley, an open trolley from Rio de Janeiro; six historic trolley structures, and numerous images and artifacts.

The museum has a staff of 12 and relies on 130 volunteers. Last year the museum hosted 38,000 visitors.
Among the events being planned are a Black-Tie “Roaring 20’s” themed dinner on May 16 and a street fair on May 18-19.

Also set are such annual events as the Bunny Trolley, Anything on Wheels, rides to the Washington County Agricultural Fair, Pumpkin Patch Trolley, Trick or Trolley, and Santa Trolley.

Good for them.

The museum has a very active U-tube feed of restored videos etc of 1940s and 1950s trolley operations. And discussions of various routes, like the Unity Branch of West Penn lines, etc.

Definitely on my list of places to visit.
