Steam & Excursion > Monday Museum Steam: Moving C&O 1604Date: 03/11/24 04:33 Monday Museum Steam: Moving C&O 1604 Author: bandob Before C&O Allegheny 1604 was displayed at the B&O Museum in Baltimore, MD, it was the centerpiece of a shopping center next door to the museum. I don't know the history or thinking that went into chosing that site for it. In 1986, it was decided to move the massive locomotive to the B&O Museum. The late Tom Arnold was there for the move, and got this photo of it on the temporary trackage that was put down for the move.

A friend of mine, who was there when it was being moved, told me just how slow this thing moved, a real snails pace. From what I remember hearing is that the people who purchased the building from the Chessie System thought that this steam engine would be a great addition to draw shoppers and other visitors into the complex. This did not work out, thus when the place was sold, the new owners wanted the engine gone from the building, thus it went back into the B&O R.R. Museum. I know now that this big engine is in the old car shop, at least it was there the last time that I visited the museum which has been a number of years ago. I gave up my membership at the museum for a number of reasons because of the management that was running the place. This has nothing to do with the current management.

Fun pictures of C&O 1604. * JB * Date: 03/12/24 12:16 Re: Monday Museum Steam: Moving C&O 1604 Author: junctiontower Interesting to me that despite her enormous size, the tender is hardly bigger than a Berk or Kanawha capacity wise.

So there is new museum management, and CSX had provided some big money for the museum. Are things looking up? Victor Baird Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/13/24 19:59 by wabash2800. |
