Steam & Excursion > Southern 4501 excursion to KnoxvilleDate: 03/15/24 03:10 Southern 4501 excursion to Knoxville Author: gcm Aug 1975
There was a convention special to Knoxville for the 1975 NRHS Convention. The Asheville - Knoxville portion was pulled by Southern 4501. We had at least one runby. The heavyweight Lookout Mountain brought up the rear. Ahead of that car were a few of the rebuilt heavyweight coaches that were sometimes used on the Piedmont and Southern Crescent. I really miss the Southern steam trips - a lot of fun. Gary Date: 03/15/24 07:25 Re: Southern 4501 excursion to Knoxville Author: refarkas First-class photos.

The Southern was a great railroad back then for fans everywhere with both historic steam engines and with diesels. But like everything else, high insurance and liability issues put a stop with all the major class one railroads.

The Lookout Mountain is now at the Reading and Northern. This last fall it was on the trains from Jim Thorpe that run up the Lehigh Gorge. It's still a wonderful car to ride. Jim Date: 03/15/24 13:23 Re: Southern 4501 excursion to Knoxville Author: gcm Jimbo Wrote:

If she'd have pulled the train back to Asheville, there almost certainly would've been a helper. The S-line is mostly downhill westbound.
