C&TSRR #15 brings high side gon #1000 to the swamp
Author: tucsonsp

Back in the summer of 2018 at a Friends' work session in Chama, N.M., the GE 47 ton #15 (the Pineapple, named after its previous Hawaiian heritage) was enlisted by the railroad to bring car #1000 from the south yard to the repair tracks for a complete rebuild of all wood components.
Here's Ed Beaudette giving the hand signals to the engine crew as #15 spots derelict car #1000 without trying to knock off any more of the rotting side wood.  Our crew had to completely cut off one side before the car could be moved by the Pineapple.  Originally built in 1902, #1000 was the first in the series of gondolas used by the Rio Grande.
The current intensive rebuild project was slowed by the pandemic. The Friends' crews are hoping to finish this refurbishment up this June.

That's OK.  #15 is the one with the original Cat D17000 prime movers.  #19 has been mongrelized with aftermarket engines.

And now Ed is the general manager!
