The Walt Disney Company’s steam trains are one of the most unique forms of transportation at Disney – the Area Mech Fleet A Mechanics strive to ensure that it is also one of the safest in the world. As a seasoned mechanic, you know what it is like to work in a shop, but using your skills at Disney is a completely unique experience.

The Area Fleet A Mechanic is responsible for keeping our steam trains in full repair so that our Guests get around Magic Kingdom, comfortably, and safely. Our first-class shop puts efficiency, productivity and concern for the safety of our mechanics front-and-center, with state-of-the-art equipment, excellent ventilation and shade of the garage to keep the sun off your back. This is a field service position that may include work from elevated platforms and confined spaces throughout the Walt Disney World Parks and Resort property.

Starting Pay Rate for this position is $28.33/hour.

Responsibilities:


Provide maintenance support to the fleet of Steam Trains
Perform preventative maintenance, routine maintenance, and planned work repairs on the Steam Train fleet both at the roundhouse and in the field
Perform preventative maintenance, routine maintenance, and planned work repairs on the track system
Answer non-routine service calls
Cast members may be required to handle cleaning chemicals and supplies
Additional Personal Protective Equipment (face shields, goggles, refillable hand sanitizers, etc.) may be required

Basic Qualifications:

Valid Florida Driver’s License
Minimum of 4 years’ experience with Steam/Diesel locomotives and passenger cars
Minimum of 4 years’ experience with railroad track repair
Minimum of 4 years’ experience performing maintenance and repairs on boilers
Possess the ability to interpret schematics, prints and tech drawings
Experience with steam locomotives and railroad standards
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
Proficiency in standard office software programs and mobile electronic devices
Preferred Qualifications:
Over 4 years’ experience in transit maintenance repair
Experience with Cummins Insite diagnostic
Knowledge of Therma King IntelligAire climate control systems
Experience with marquee destination sign repair
Multiplex Electronic Equipment experience
Familiarity with transit GPS tracking
Understanding of Wheelchair lift/ramp

That's $8.33 more than what McDonalds pays its cashiers - well, in CA, anyway.

I wonder what Disneyland pays now with minimum wage at $20.00? 

Kind of surprised they still have a steam train.  Surprised, but happy to hear it.

The starting pay, if you have all their 'asks' is pittance..
It ought to be $80 to $120/hr, to attract a capable person,
as they're looking for & who meets those 'requirements'.
$28/hr?  Gimme a Break !

I would second what Wes said, half of those skills would get you 60-70 bucks an hour
in similar locales.

Transit guy here. Lots of requirements that match-up with a transit bus mechanic. Wages seem very low, even for Florida.

You are all comparing the wage to bus mechanics and other heavy industrial jobs. Try comparing them to what tourist railroads are paying and I bet you'll find it's not far off.

steam often for the love of running steam, it's another

They make a point of saying they want a lot of transit experience with GPS, wheel chair lifts, climate control, etc.  Pretty slim pickings considering transit phased out steam long ago.  I would hope that Disney could afford some dedicated track workers instead of using the steam shop guys to replace ties and broken rails.

Just checked the Strasburg Mechanical Shops webpage.  Entry level Steam Shop Mechanic, $ 15.00 to $30.00/hour based on experience.  

That's a pretty high skill level for that kind of money.  I wondering there's a manager level type that knows anything about ralroads.

Crapy salary for what they want.  They better start a lot higher.

Looks like Disney is trying to get three RR people for 1/2 the price on one.

Disney may be spoiled by the relatively low wages paid on their cruise ships to crew members from Indonesia, Philippines, Montenegro, Kenya, etc.

How much does a boiler explosion cost ?

Boiler explosions had  been typically caused by low-water
conditions, as a result of operating crews' actions,
or lack thereof.

Boiler explosions caused by "poor maintenance"
have not been often reported.

However, there is often a link between poor maintenance 
practices and poor operating practices ....and poor training 
provided.
