Steam & Excursion > 3751,844,3985Date: 08/27/02 08:52 3751,844,3985 Author: CPRR Just out of curiosity:
Could someone on the crew of the 3751 tell us how hot it was in the cab at speed, and waiting in the sidings? What is the typical temp in the UP steamers also And finally, what is the drink of the crew to stay cool? Thank you. Date: 08/27/02 10:04 UP's Locomotives Author: Bob3985 On our steam locomotives, when running down the rails at speed it actually is fairly comfortable. Running with the windows wide open and a nice 50-60mph breeze.
However sitting in the heat on display is another story. If it is like 98 degrees ambient and no breeze, it can reach temps of 135-140 in the cab. And when traveling through tunnel 41 on Donner second out in the double header it got to around 170-180 in the cab of the second loco. You are correct. That was on the doubleheader in 1999. It got mighty hot being second out and thank goodness for the emergency air hoods. Bob |
