1923 Edwards Model 10 Motor Car
Author: scraphauler

It's been rumored for some time now that Aberdeen Carolina & Western Railroad had acquired an Edwards Model 10 Motor Car.  Reportedly, the history of this particular machine is that it  built new in 1923 in neighboring Sanford NC for Georgia's Washington and Lincolnton Railroad.  In 1929, they then sold the car to the Birmingham and Southeastern who used it for decades as their M-500.  In the 1970 the car came into private ownership.  Car apparently was rebuilt in the early 2000s by the new Edwards Rail Car.   Those rumors appear to have validity as this was seen Sunday 4/14 outside ACWR's Candor NC shop.

As has been chronicled on the eastern board (see ACWR Trackwork Update), ACWR is building a passenger car year at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club that will offer PV parking with full hook-ups and resort amenities for 30+ cars, and serve as a key piece of ACWR's growing passenger, excursion, and dinner train business.
Further rumors are that the M-500 will be used in special events at the Resort to shuttle patrons from main club house to the brand new Pinehurst #10, the 10th championship 18 hole course at the resort. The course is called Pinehurst Sandmines and is the first of 2 scheduled at a former sand mine that closed in the 70s.  This mine was a customer for the Southern Railway, and original Norfolk Southern before that.  The official logo for the course is a hopper car full of sand - quote from their press release when course opened two weeks ago " There’s a lot of history at this place, and you just want to honor it,” says Angela Moser, Doak’s lead design associate on No. 10. “You want to have it be a part of what you’re building, so you’ll see reminders of it.” That is also reflected in the Pinehurst Sandmines logo. A rail car, dashed in railroad red color befitting the area’s industrial innovations, features subtle hints about the property’s past – and its future – within the car’s structure and design."

Time will tell if this motor car, or rail in general, will be used in relation to Pinehurst 10.  The "and its future" in the Resort's press release hints that it might.
