Monday Museum Steam: CB&Q #915
Author: bandob

This 10-wheeler was reportedly built in Nebraska as #44. It was donated to the city of Council Bluffs, IA and is seen here at the Rails West Museum in 2007. Here's a view of it with the Cornhusker Club passenger car and another closer view.

Inside valve gear of some sort?  Or just lost to history?

Most probably 2 sets of cams on axle #2,  connected to
Stephenson C-shaped links.

The engineer can raise and lower the link-assembly to
control direction and shorten valve admission periods,
to conserve boiler water.

The modified ( upgraded) cylinders and valves use 'outside-admission'
spool valves, operated by the original Stephenson links. The spool valves
allow less steam to be used, during a trip.  And were a common indicator
of the boiler being changed to supply superheated steam to the pistons.

I can't determine if superheaters were added to this particular boiler .

I've never seen cylinder head covers such as pictured here.

An unusually graceful CB&Q engine.

Three of these Q K4's still exist. This one, the 919 in Aliance and the 710 in Lincoln. All were built at the Burlington and Missouri River RR shops at Havelock Ne in the late 1890's
There is video of the 919 running in 1958 between Cheyenne and Sterling thanks to Jim E.
The two photos I added here were taken in July 2016. The 915 looks way worse now.
