UP 4014 rumors about hauling a freight this trip?
Author: RailRat

I saw this speculation on a YouTube channel a few days ago, it could be an entire freight train, or could be the usual 3 or 4 freight cars and caboose we saw a few years ago? I dunno.

It would have to be pretty slow "freight train", as 4014 generally does NOT exceed 55 MPH. Plus, they only run a few hundred miles a day.

That was the "test train" for break-in purposes, out of Cheyenne, with a quick return back to Cheyenne.

I dunno.

it needs something for braking  , passenger cars will be along for some of the run you figure if they are selling tickets  for a portion

The UP can NOT "sell tickets". Only a sponsoring organization can "sell tickets" if such organization charters the train and pays UP, including the cost of liability insurance. Plus, no photo runs either.

Given that its their engine and their railroad, is there a reason why they can't?  Or do they just not want to?

Goes back to the agreements and requirements around the end of railroad owned/operated passengers trains and the formation of Amtrak.

Correct. In other words, it is against Federal Law for any class 1 railroad to sell tickets and thus compete with Amtrak.

UP studied running las Vegas trains from LA in 2008 briefly , they were not too concerned about it.   UP has let RMR run Denver-moab trains, another company dream star is wanting your investment dollars to run SF-LA overnight trains, so Amtrak may have company running trains, in certain areas, doubt the government would be unyielding in any public services in the future.  UP has  its hands full running their own freight trains now.  UP is trying to get away from helping run Chicago commuter trains now.   UP got rid of all but one of it's flat top coaches due to liability reasons among others, being focused on productive assets for wall streets demand for strealined operations

Please provide evidence that Union Pacific was studying running and operating its own passenger train with passengers paying Union Pacific.

Has absolutely nothing to do with a Class 1 railroad that use to run their own passenger trains and got out of the passenger train business during and round the federal creation of Amtrak. As I previously pointed out and Jack confirmed, Union Pacific Railroad can not operate its own passenger train with passengers paying Union Pacific to do so.

Again, entirely different scenario. Please stay on topic.

Back in 2002, Union Pacific asked the Chicago Chapter of NRHS and the 20th Century Railroad Club to sponsor two round trips from West Chicago, IL to Milwaukee, WI.   Passenger payments were made to those organizations to comply with stated regulations.
