I hope someone catches 4014 rounding Arnold Loop on video
Author: RailRat

Please it's an arduous adventure just getting up there but well worth the risk, just don't drive up there in a regular car, I promise the rock roads will beat a regular car to death! 4x4 is best!
I did it in 1992 with a 4x4 pickup and a lot of pre-planning shoots before the big day, because my work back then often took me by this location and many other areas of Northern Nevada
PM me if you like for details.

This video is west of Wendover, Utah/Nevada and truly in the middle of Nowhere, Nevada, and nothin' but hard Rock all around.

You can hear the retired hogger from Washington who was next to me shout "DAMN THATS BEAUTIFUL!"
He was absolutely thrilled!

Yes another re-post but I felt that it fit in with 4014 upcoming trip.

Thank the WP's original engineering decision to keep grades to a 1% maximum for this huge loop.

Beauty, eh?  Looks like she wasn't struggling at all.  Out there where God lost his slippers, as my father would say.  Thanks for posting!

Yes I always wore high shin thick rubber boots when trudging around out there.

Well I'll be danged!, what a small world we live in.
There were 2 guys next to me, from Chehalis WA. (Roger Dunn I think?) And the other was a retired hogger who was absolutely thrilled to death, you can hear him shout "God that's beautiful!" If you listen closely as 3985 is rounding the curve and sounding her whistle.

Back then there was a maintenance road crossing to access the center of the loop, that was very easy to bottom out a normal car on!
I think it was removed a few years after this video

And yes always seemed to be windy, hot and sometimes thunder storms could rapidly form and sneak up on top of you from the west, and with hardly any shelter around but my vehicle, I would have to get the heck out of there, in fact that's why I skipped filming the 6936 rounding the loop after 3985 this day, it got dark, cloudy and thunder/lightning very quickly.

Doing the same thing the old WP Challenger engines did:  pull trains at good speed over the 1% line.  Just how it was, music to our ears, every day back then.  Really is the perfect engine for that sort of train and grade.  3985 just hammers along and never skips a beat.

Thank you all for your nice comments!
And I still miss Bob Kreger's comments about anyone's post here when it came to UP Steam Crew!

Won't be as spectacular compared to when 3985 went that way, look at the Archer Hill video to compare!
