Steam & Excursion > The Pig HoggerDate: 04/20/24 14:51 The Pig Hogger Author: MaryMcPherson Here is a photo scanned from an uncredited slide in my collection, dated May 22nd, 1980.
Crab Orchard & Egyptian 2-8-0 #17 (Canadian Locomotive Co., 1940, CN#1959) is seen putting together a piggyback train to head to the railroad's ramp at the west end of the line at Ordill, near Crainville, Illinois. The photo is taken at the Madison Street crossing in Marion. CO&E president Hugh Crane designed both the pyramid logo used on the railroad's trailer fleet (it was a trailer decal that was used on #17's tender) along with the piggyback service logo showing a pig atop a 2-4-2 based on the railroad's first locomotive. Interestingly, the photo of the trailer shows an example that lacks the "Pig Hogger" lettering with the logo. It was a unique operation that only a comparative few got to experience while it lasted.
