Monday Museum Steam: Wabash 573
Author: bandob

This attractive locomotive was at the National  Museum of Transportation near St. Louis, MO in 2018.

According to the Museum's Web Site:

"Wabash Locomotive #573 was originally #754. Built in 1899, it was rebuilt in 1915 to the #573 Locomotive 2-6-0 Mogul Class F5. The #573 was built to haul freight. It was used to carry freight across a bridge over the Illinois River at Bluffs, IL, that would not support the heavier diesel locomotives. It is one of only two surviving Wabash steam locomotives."

573 and its mate 576 were famously portraited by David P Morgan and Phillip R Hastings in Trains' 'Smoke Over the Prairies' at Bluffs and Meredosia in 1954.

Yes. And, Kemtron came up with a kit to build one in 1/4" scale.

Here's one I built, in 1961 I think.

And AHM did come out with a brass HO model I think. The Wabash finally solved the bridge problem sans steam with a detour on the Burlignton and the use of Pennsy GE 44 tonners over the bridge.
