Steam & Excursion > Three from Cumbres and Toltec 5 July 24Date: 07/05/24 22:02 Three from Cumbres and Toltec 5 July 24 Author: CimaScrambler I made my 6th trip on the Cumbres and Toltec today, from Chama to Antonito with a return to Chama by bus. The weather was spectacular, the onboard crew fantastic, and the narrow gauge experience as fine as ever. This also makes it 51 years that I've been visiting the line - the first trip I was seventeen years old and hitchhiked to Chama after reading Steinheimer's Backwoods Railways of the West book. This time I brought a friend along that had never been there before. I think we have another convert from the experience.
Here are three photos from the day. 1) A bunch of happy folk riding in the open gondola car near Coxo as #489 worked hard up the steep side of Cumbres Pass 2) At Osier, #489 was cut off the eastbound train and turned on the baloon loop to lead the westbound back to Chama after lunch. We were behind Mudhen 463 from Osier to Antonito in the afternoon. 3) Two crewmen chat together at Osier as the lunch break came to an end.
