Steam & Excursion > Back in the Days of SteamDate: 09/23/24 07:58 Back in the Days of Steam Author: train1275 Norwich, NY on the NYO&W in the early 1900's.
The scene shows a 4-4-0 camelback and the old New York & Oswego Midland Roundhouse and covered turntable necessary in those days of real winters in Upstate New York. Date: 09/23/24 08:07 Re: Back in the Days of Steam Author: WM_1109 Wow. You've been holding out on us, Doug.
Do you know the location of the former NYO&W roundhouse within Norwich? /Ted Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/23/24 10:26 by WM_1109. Date: 09/23/24 08:25 Re: Back in the Days of Steam Author: ts1457 Thanks for sharing.

About right where the "new" Junior High School is located south of the Senior High School off Midland Drive. When the new school was being built about 1980 the contractors hit the concrete foundations of the new replacement roundhouse -built circa 1911 I think. I was sent down to the site by the City of Norwich historians office with the plans and mapping of the roundhouse area showing the foundations so they had an idea of just where things were and what to expect. The new roundhouse and car shops were torn down about 1962 after the O&W went out in 1957. Both the new Norwich High School and Midland Apartments complex were built immediately afterwards. by 1964. So by the time I got there, which would've been 1983-1985, there wouldn't have been much to look at. But I may have meandered down from the HoJo's to take a peek, had I only known. /Ted Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/23/24 09:32 by WM_1109. Doug Ellison Vermilion, OH I worked Ho-Jo's front desk from 1984 - 1987 except a time in 1985 when I was at Metro-North-Mechanical. What company were you with ? Downtown Norwich has radically changed since those days. Not for the better. The old Ho-Jo's is a drug den from what I've heard. P&G pulling out of town was like a nuclear bomb. Edited 1 time(s).
