Steam & Excursion > Jay Leno's Garage - 4014Date: 09/23/24 16:23 Jay Leno's Garage - 4014 Author: x9000 Jay Leno's Garage episode on 4014 is up on YouTube. Just over 1 hour in length. Jay spends a lot of time with Ed talking about 4014 and it's history. There's also a visit to the Herbage Car shop.

Date: 09/23/24 22:49 Re: Jay Leno's Garage - 4014 Author: webmaster That is fantastic segment with great personality from both Leno and Dickens. I am particularly impressed with the production quality, especially the audio. After watching that piece Ed is a great ambassador for Union Pacific. This was well worth an hour of your time.
This was one of two segments of Jay Leno's where that I saw where he did not get to drive... perhaps off camera he got a little throttle time. Todd Clark Canyon Country, CA Trainorders.com Date: 09/24/24 07:37 Re: Jay Leno's Garage - 4014 Author: GNRocky I was very impressed with how well this show was done. Great job to Ed Dickens and the UP Steam crew, Union Pacific Railroad and Jay Leno on this. Ed really is a key ambassador along with the rest of the UP steam team for these tours over the UP system and helps to generate the great PR with the general public and customers for the UP. Very well done!!

Drive? Seriously Todd, The British drive their trains but her in the US of A engineers Run the engine or perhaps operate it. Oh the humanities. Date: 09/24/24 12:43 Re: Jay Leno's Garage - 4014 Author: wcamp1472 I liked the statement made that the 4000s were built to pull
5 mile long trains. Its important because, if true, it means all the drafting arrangements were designed for successful, sustained firing-rates and conditions to support maximum drafting, at full-load, 5-mile long trains. Since it's conversion to oil fuels, the whole firebox drafting was changed from coal-grates to fire-brick lined, sheet steel 'fire-pans', and the burner from a Challenger loco. The damper-controlled, air inlets to the firespace are nowhere near the grate-area of the coal grates. So, the draft provided by 12 or so cars, probably represents air-flow rates of 2% of what the designed & intended steam generating capacity of the 4000 class locos. No wonder that they drag around 3 water cars... There's no possible way they can get steam temps up to any appreciable degree of 'superheat' . There's no way he can the drafts needed without speeding at an excessively high rate of speed. He stays sloshing-along, mile after mile as a saturated-soaker, low speed, low draft, cold firebox. Don't get all excited, yet. ( But, they all knew that when they decided to return 4014 to to steam operations... There'll be no trains, 5 miles long, hauled by ONE loco.. ) W. Edited 2 time(s). Date: 09/24/24 13:23 Re: Jay Leno's Garage - 4014 Author: HotWater Somehow I really don't believe that the Union Pacific, nor any other railroad, ran "5 mile long" trains in the 1940s.

..on solid fuels. Drafting is dependent on the weight behind the tender. 14 cars is a paltry draft capacity.... it would barely tax a 4-4-2! W. Edited 2 time(s). I've heard that 5 mile statement for at least 50 years.
4014 wasn't restored to be a heavy freight engine. It is doing exactly what it was restored to do, be a show pony and a PR tool and doing it well. When 3985 was converted to oil, it was a miserable SOB to fire. Jack remembers that too. The drafting was off and after calling in help and correcting that I'm told it made a huge difference. From my observation, the burner on 4014 seems to be doing a great job (not the 3985's burner) 3985 was rode hard a few times on freight and I wouldn't give up on 4014 doing it too someday. Right now its the shiny new thing and UP calls the shots despite what we would like to see. The helper service stint a couple years ago was pleasant to watch and hear (on video). I really liked Jay's tour inside those passenger cars for the executives! He said something like "You expect to see President Grant sitting here" (or something like that. Agreed, I'm sure they probably let him at the throttle, because hey, he's Jay Lenno! Probably off camera of course for various reasons? Makes me wonder why they superheated steam switch engines. > Date: 09/25/24 13:09 Re: Jay Leno's Garage - 4014 Author: wcamp1472 I've wondered the same thing....about switch engines.
In most yard duty, they handled only a few cars, And kicking cars was too inconsistent in firebox drafting. It takes a steady, strong draft to get the brick-arch to incandescence... and superheating doesn't begin until the refractory bricks ( oil-fired or coal-fired fireboxes) get to incandescence. It requires highest temperatures and 'smokeless burning'.. Smoke is unburned carbon, because of "oxygen starvatio", try raising tte wick up on a kerosene "chimney lamp"... then slowly lower the back into the burner... note the changes in flame color & temperatures W.
