Rather typical Cass "smoke so thick you could walk on it".   The fireman I had told me they were taught if you weren't lifting the pops all day and making gobs of smoke, you weren't doing your job...

Why? Waste of $, amongst other things. Are they still doing that now that the locomotives aren't run by the State?

If you're in to that kind of thing, some of us aren't. Like others have said, just a waste of coal and just gives the enviomental types more ammunition.
