Steam vs. Helene
Author: LTCerny

Despite the challenges of Hurricane Helene, the TVRM 100-mile steam round trip from Chattanooga TN to Summerville GA left on time at 9am this morning. Congratulations to a dedicated crew.

We were very fortunate in NW Georgia that the storm was not worse. What happened in North Carolina and eastern Tennessee is very sad and prayers go out for the victims.

Is part of this run over NS track? It's a credit to TVRM that NS has confidence in them and its own people to make this happen.

About 3 miles is on NS through 23rd Street interlocking and down the Central of Georgia to the Georgia state line where state ownership begins. NS' involvement is near nil, other than CT Dispatcher having to answer a call and line up a signal at 23rd. The Central is local track, not any sort of mainline.

The bigger involvement is with Genesee & Wyoming's Chattooga & Chickamauga RR that operates line from the state line down to Summerville. They provide a pilot for these excursion trains.

If anyone deserves a pat on the back for making these excursions possible it's the State of Georgia. If it was up to the freight railroads, these wouldn't run.

And 2-8-2 #4501 just got the train back within a few minutes of the 6pm schedule on its 9-hour trip.

I thought I’d check Great Smoky Mountain Railroad on FB to see if there was anything posted on damage. Just a note saying today’s trains were canceled due to weather.

“Due to the effects of the heavy rain and winds, there will be no train 9/28/24. Safety for passengers and staff is of upmost importance.
All reservations are being refunded in full automatically. Please check your email for more information.“

Fingers crossed the line fared okay.
