U S Sugar Express
Author: bobwilcox

I enjoyed riding behind a special U. S. Sugar Express excursion a week ago. The weather was fine, and we didn't encounter any alligators, phytons, fire ants, etc. on the photo line. U. S. Sugar's 148 was manufactured at ALCO's Richmond works for the FEC.

Great shot!  Nice to see her back in operation - I understand that this was the locomotive that ran down the NJ Transit North Jersey Coast to Bay Head back in the 1970s - a little before I was around or maybe I was in diapers, but I've seen photos!

I'm currently trying to talk myself out of extending my vacation and booking spots in the adult only car in Decemeber Santa train. I rode the very first public excursion and due to work, hurricanes, or weather haven't been back in FL at the right time to get another ride.

Indeed, 148 did pull an excursion train, the Blue Comet, on the NY&LB to Bay Head, NJ.  It was on December 6th, 1975.  It is pictured crossing the Navasink River, north of Red Bank. NJ.  Consist was all CNJ commuter coaches.

Wasn't that the trip that was covered by NBC's Tomorrow program, hosted by Tom Snyder, who was also a railfan?  Trains Magazine also had a feature article about the trip and the TV program's coverage of it.
