Given builders plate and marker lamps are on it,  I'd guess it was still in service.  Those items disappeared really quickly from vacated engines.

Looks like the KYA radio tower on the hill
at left, which would mean Bayshore.

(The tower was replaced by the mast
that's there now.)

Look closely above the headlight and the engine medalion is gone. Stripping has commenced

Good catch that number plate gone. According to Strapac,  it was vacated at Bayshore 5/2/57,  scrapped 7/1/57 at California Metals in Pittsburg, CA

Correct. Generally the SP did NOT bother to letter the tenders on those cab forwards assigned to the Donner Pass route. After a few trips through all the snow sheds/tunnels, the tender lettering was obscured anyway. Besides, what other rail roads in North America had cab forwards beside the Southern Pacific?

Curious where is the builders plate located on these engines?
I see what looks like a rectangular placard spot with possible 4 mounting holes or bolts up on side of smoke box area, but it looks blank or just too dirty to tell?

Kinda looks like the builder's plate is gone and the rectangular one is probably the Superheater Co plate.
