Memorable Steam Events 2024
Author: cozephyr

1 - The epic CPKC 2816 Final Spike 2816 Steam Train tour was amazing.  Traveling from Canada across the USA into Mexico starting in late April 2024 made stops in many cities and towns.  CP 2816 was wiped down at Nahant Yard near Davenport, Iowa, 10 May 2024.

2 - Union Pacific 4014 Big Boy Heartland of America Tour operated in August into October 2024.  Train was on UP's Moffat Tunnel Subdivision on the Belt Line north of Denver, CO, making the last leg of an amazing tour back to Cheyenne, WY, 23 October 2024.

3 - UP 4014 Big Boy made a stop at Harriman, WY, for servicing 2024.  The Harriman Water Tank was removed on 17 December 2024.  NO sound video.

Thanks for sharing your photos and video.  I really like that last video of the 4014 in motion.  You're on the dark side, but somehow it all worked out great.

The 2816 trip was certainly quite an accomplishment.

Can we include the announcement of NYC 3001 being restored to operation (potentially makimg 3001 the first operable NYC steam engine since 1957) as a memorable event?

Yes, the New York Central 3001 is great news.  I look forward to folks sharing their memorable steam events of 2024.

PHall regarding the 2816 question:

It is the Viloco air piston operated Superheated whistle off of the CP 5935 Selkirk. The shield box is an attempt to deflect that tremendous sound. I enjoyed that whistle and as a fireman you learn to duck your head inward to avoid the inevitable water splash when it hasn’t been used for a few miles. The Viloco valve is either on or off providing a unique sound when combined with that surge of water.

This event may not be as memorable to others as it was to me but this partial turn of the 4449 on the newly installed Turntable at the ORHC was very thrilling.  As I have said before the quallity of my photogrphy is not especially good but I do my best.  Other things such as the bridge brakes and fencing have been installed sine this video was taken.
