Remembering the "Pennsylvania Limited"
Author: Pattenburg

Seen here passing through the Elizabethtown, PA station on June 8, 1985. Motive power was PRR 7002 and PRR 1223 for this day's excursion. Take note of what was charged for this run. Also since this picture was taken, the Elizabethtown station has been completely rebuilt.

Thanks for sharing the photo with all of us, I remember the trip so well as there were a number of us who heard about the trip too late to purchase tickets.  They could have repeated this trip several times if the railroads would have allowed it.

Trips with the same or similar itineraries were run in August, 1985 for the National Railway Historical Society Annual Convention in Lancaster and in October 1986.  I saw the latter riding Amtrak's eastbound Broadway Limited approaching Harrisburg.

Pretty sure these two locos brought a special to the Philadelphia area.  I saw the train in Paoli.  Do not have the date nor complete itinerary.
Anyone have particulars?

$47.50 in 1985 is worth $139.27 today. Quite the bargain for an all day double headed steam excursion.

If you've never seen the videos on this trip, dig them out.   Incredible.   7002 was really strutting and it was all that 1223 could do to keep up, but it did.   No 15mph running on that one.

That looks like very heavy rail, giving true meaning in how it looks:  High Iron!!
