That is a beautiful image, and I'm particularly interested in the capturing of tone range.  What I'm referring to is that so often the darker side of a steam locomotive in a partial backlighting situation is too dark, mostly black with little detail visible. This photo seems to be a perfect balance of contrast, with some black areas, but with most of the front of the locomotive, while in shade, still appearing well lit.

I'm just wondering, was this a matter of technique and technology, like using some kind of contrast compression and recording in RAW, or was there a giant sunlit cloud above and behind the camera providing fill illumination?

Yes one of my favourite places with old MLW units I grow up with in Ottawa, ON...plus great steam power!

This was shot in auto because if you at the ballist you can see the shadows I used a Nikon D7000 and very little photo shop elements 11 for a small touch of highlights 99 percent of the time I use auto and a small touch up thanks for looking
