Steam & Excursion > Favorite Charles Clegg Frisco shot.Date: 04/23/25 16:44 Favorite Charles Clegg Frisco shot. Author: Frisco1522 As I mentioned in the 4304 shot a few days ago, when I wrote my Frisco book, I obtained TIFF scans of Beebe and Clegg's Frisco negatives and paid extra to publish them.
I've always loved this shot of 4153 near Denison, TX by Clegg. Caption in their book was "Tidy little Frisco Mike". Actually they weren't little and were workhorses for the Frisco.Baldwin built them side by side with the famous 1500s, in series just like the 1500s. There were 65 of them. 4100-4134 were equipped with Baker valve gear and had the main air reservoirs below the running boards. 4135-4149 had Walschaerts gear and reservoirs up top, just like 1515-1519. The final series 4150-4164, like the 1520-1529 had some minor differences biggest visually was the sand dome moved to a different position. They hung around until the end, like the 1500s. I also took the liberty of colorizing this shot for the book. ![]() Date: 04/23/25 17:15 Re: Favorite Charles Clegg Frisco shot. Author: EMD2024 Good work Don. Another sharp looking Frisco steamer.

Craig Hanson Vay, Idaho Date: 04/23/25 19:49 Re: Favorite Charles Clegg Frisco shot. Author: TrackGuy Doc Reiter built an impressive oil burning model of one of these in 1.6" scale about 30 years ago out in LA from the Railroad Supply Corp. castings. His grandson has the engine now. A work of art. Nice to see a color photo of one of the real ones. Great work, Don.

I also have a beautiful action photo of the prototype taken by him. He was an excellent photographer also. Date: 04/24/25 05:34 Re: Favorite Charles Clegg Frisco shot. Author: train1275 What book did this image appear in ?
Date: 04/24/25 08:50 Re: Favorite Charles Clegg Frisco shot. Author: tomstp Art Reiters Frisco engine was a 4-8-2 "1500 series". For several years he came to Roy Pickard's live steam track near Comanche Tx. Roy held steam meets twice a year for invited Live Steamers. Reiter liked to ride behind his engine and listen to it running and barking. It was a remarkably good engine.
I was fortunate to be his chosen Engineer many, many times. By chance the tender derailed going thru a switch and broke in half one side frame. We got it back to the shop and in a few hours mounted a 4 wheel truck to the tender so Art could keep running. That happened during the early part of the steam meet and Reiter was so relived he would be able to run. After those repairs I fired up my 10 wheeler and continued to run. Art Reiter was a heck of a nice man along with several other live steamers he brought with him. Damn, I miss those days. Date: 04/24/25 14:16 Re: Favorite Charles Clegg Frisco shot. Author: Frisco1522 Tom, his engine was 2-8-2 #4158. Wasn't quite done in this photo, still needed the air pump.
Absolutely beautiful engine! Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/24/25 14:17 by Frisco1522. ![]() Date: 04/24/25 20:18 Re: Favorite Charles Clegg Frisco shot. Author: santafe199 Another great image from your collection, which should be the envy of every serious shooter/collector here on TO… 😁

Date: 04/29/25 06:27 Re: Favorite Charles Clegg Frisco shot. Author: timz How long does the coloring take?
What book ... has to be one of the three. I'll guess Highliners, with High Iron next possibility. |
