Western Maryland Scenic
Author: ClubCar

Okay, I know some of you will get upset; however, we all want to know has anyone been over to the Ridgely, West Virginia Yard of the Western Maryland Scenic R.R. to see if the former C&O 1309 is being steamed up for this upcoming weekend?  Yes, It's Wednesday, and I would think that if this engine is going to be operated this weekend that the engine should be under steam and being tested right now, or is there going to be another postponement?  Please, anyone in the area, let us know.  Thank you so much.

The answer to your first question is yes, the 1309 is being fired up. There is smoke over Ridgeley, WV.

Clubbed, who are you proposing to carry out this mission?
Cumberland is a long way from anywhere, and AFAIK, there have been no active TO members in the Cumberland area since Tim Wilson passed.
If there are, they sure keep it a secret.
There has been no local news coverage about 1309's failure last weekend. The VRF chat room has been disabled for the WMSR camera. There has been no dissent on WMSR's social media.
The cone of silence is obvious...

How do you get "white smoke" out of a coal burner?

If it's white smoke, does that mean they're getting a new engine? (LOL)

The same way they do for a new Pope, with chemicals!

if it’s white smoke, my first thought would be more wildfires burning in the mountains around Cumberland.

I understand that when people refer to "white smoke" coming from the stack they are describing a condensation cloud.  I just don't get hung up on it, even if I have to fight the urge to cringe a bit.

Sorry but, that doesn't work on big steam locomotive firebox. Years ago, the guys on the UP Steam Crew attempted various "chemicals" in order to produce colored smoke on 844. No mater how much they used, they could not produce any visible color to the exhaust.

They must have converted it to oil.

Except, with an oil burner you get "white smoke" when the fire is out. Thus, that is unburned fuel vapor,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,wait for the big bang in the firebox when the fire reignites!
