Nostalgia & History > CNW in Kansas City - 1986Date: 08/21/08 20:12 CNW in Kansas City - 1986 Author: PRose The CNW first entered Kansas City when they took over the Chicago Great Western, using the Great Western line from Des Moines, IA to Leavenworth, KS and trackage rights over the Mopac from Leavenworth to KC.
When the CNW acquired the old Rock Island Spine Line from Des Moines to KC, they abandoned the Great Western Line and the old CGW yard in KC. No longer having a yard in KC, the trains were pre-blocked and switched out in Liberty, MO, just north of KC. Transfer or "Shuttle" runs would then deliver the blocks to the various railroads in the city. 1) Southbound CNW 6857 approaches "Drawbridge" on former Rock Island/Milwaukee joint trackage. There is still an operator at Drawbridge today manned by the IC&E. 2.7 miles to the north is Birmingham where the CNW crossed the N&W KC to Moberly, MO main. 2) The rear end crosses the Drawbridge. Both Photos May 14, 1986. 3) A CNW Shuttle with the 6910 in the lead is approaching Sheffield Interlocking on the KC Terminal. March 28, 1986. Thanks for looking.
