Nostalgia & History > Three Photos of the Original Norfolk SouthernDate: 11/03/14 14:11 Three Photos of the Original Norfolk Southern Author: MartyBernard This is my first post of some pictures of the original Norfolk Southern Railway that existed between 1942 and 1982. Wikipedia says, "It was purchased by the Southern Railway in 1974 [keeping its name until the Southern] merged with the Norfolk and Western Railway in 1982 to form the Norfolk Southern Railway. At the end of 1970, it operated 624 miles of road on 801 miles of track; that year it reported 710 million ton-miles of revenue freight."
Here are three GP18s. 1. NS 6 at Plymouth, NC on May 24, 1970. 2. NS 8 at Charlotte, NC on October 27, 1968. 3. NS 11 at Norfolk, VA on May 25, 1970. Enjoy, Marty Bernard Edited 1 time(s). It didn't take Southern long, for example, to renumber and repaint the NS locomotives (the ones they kept, at least). present Norfolk Southern. Date: 08/18/18 18:44 Re: Three Photos of the Original Norfolk Southern Author: CR3 Marty, thanks for the Baldwins on the original Norfolk Southern. Any photos at Pinetown where the branch took off to Belhaven? My Grandparents lived in Pinetown during WWII. We rode the train once from Berkely Va. to Pinetown (near Washington N.C.) during the war. They were running ancient 4-6-O's and old looking coaches then. No air conditioning but you could raise the windows up. They had screens in the windows trying to keep the cinders out. I remember the crossing of the Albemarle Sound on the long trestle bridge. I looked out the rear car and you could see the bridge swaying as we crossed. They could not reach bedrock when building the bridge in some places so it went up and down like being mounted in chewing gum.
