Nostalgia & History > Falcon service SD-40-2 One of only 2 on the CNW!Date: 05/01/16 09:25 Falcon service SD-40-2 One of only 2 on the CNW! Author: slacks CNW had 2 sd-40,s painted with the Falcon service hearld to promote the CNW-UP highspeed service. CNW #6910 and 6922 were the pair and this is the 6922 at Lisbon Ia buried in the consist of an eb. This is the only decent shot I have of one. I believe they both met an early demise by wreck damage and didn,t make it to the UP merger. Would appreciate an update if I,m wrong.

You're not wrong, neither one made the merger. I beleive one, 6910 IIRC, met its demise at the infamous Wapsi River bridge washout between Calamus and Wheatland, which I know you have shots of. I don't recall where the other one got wrecked. This paint scheme can be compare to the original Iowa Northern bright yellow scheme in that any locomotive that got it, died. Nice touch.

The #6910 was a wreck victim also but in a different accident all together up in Minnesota some time later. It was rebuilt though and went into the lease fleet after that. The #6912 went to Oelwein and sat around for a few years in the back lot before being scrapped altogether. Date: 05/01/16 15:37 Re: Falcon service SD-40-2 One of only 2 on the CNW! Author: MILW86A 6910 and 6922 were the Falcon Units per Withers Book. 6922 was in a wreck in 1984. 6910 of course was in the famous July 15 1976 at the Wapsi.
Do you(Slacks or Angus) remember the engineers name that was killed? MILW86A Date: 05/01/16 16:00 Re: Falcon service SD-40-2 One of only 2 on the CNW! Author: CNW8531 MILW86A Wrote:

Also, once again, it was the 6912 that was involved in the Wapsi bridge derailment, not the 6910. Date: 05/01/16 17:53 Re: Falcon service SD-40-2 One of only 2 on the CNW! Author: slacks This is the SD-40 that went into the Wapsi in the bridge collapse at Wheatland. It,s remains are at Calumus Ia a few days after being pulled from the river. My brother is right it was dragged to the ex-CGW shops at Oelwein but never rebuilt.
