Was the Pocahontas the day train on the Norfolk-Cinc route with the Powhatton Arrow being the overnight train? In one of the Classic Trains issues, there is an article regarding a trip taken on the Powhatten Arrow in the months leading up to Amtrak. It was part of a circle trip from Chicago to the East Coast and back. Author I think was Kevin Keefe or J. David Ingles. He said he left Cinc in the evening (after riding a day PC train to Cinc from Chicago) on the Powhatton Arrow in a sleeper and rode to Roanoke where he switched to the remnant of the old SOU Birmingham Special to DC. The Powhatton Arrow had a diner and a dome. Sleeper passengers had comp meals in the diner. He then rode a Metroliner to NYP and then the Montreal Limited to Rouses Point, NY where he got on the SB Laurentian. Very good article.

The ICC allowed the N&W to drop the Arrow for an upgrade of the Pokey. The Pocahontas lasted until Amtrak, and was the overnight train to Cincinnati. In its later years, it carried a sleeper only between Roanoke and Cincinnati. Art House Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/29/18 06:57 by aehouse.
